Wegmans, known for supermarkets in excess of 100,000 square feet, has identified three locations in mixed-use developments for new, smaller stores  that are expected to open in 2022.

An 81,300 square foot store is slated for a spring opening in Carlyle-Alexandria, VA that will feature two levels of parking below and residential units above. It will be part of Carlyle Crossing, a 1.7-million square foot development that includes commercial, residential and retail, all within a short walk from the Eisenhower Ave. Metro stop.

Wegmans is also planning for its first Washington D.C. location. The 84,000 square foot store, scheduled to open next summer, will be at the former site of Fannie Mae’s headquarters on Wisconsin Ave. in a large mixed-use development called City Ridge. According to a story in Supermarket News, in order to accommodate the store and three levels of underground parking, the existing historic building was jacked up by millimeters so new columns could be put in place before it was set on a new foundation.

Closer to home (Greater Philly), Wegmans plans to open an 84,000 square foot store near Wilmington, DE next fall that will serve as the anchor for a development with other retail stores, townhomes and apartments.

Wegmans’ “smaller” store pipeline extends beyond 2022. The company recently announced plans to open an 82,000 square foot store in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.

These planned smaller stores join other similarly-sized Wegmans supermarkets, including Chestnut Hill, MA; Brooklyn, NY, and Tysons Corner, VA.
